We are in our fourth year as part of the Australia Africa Community Engagement Scheme (AACES), a program which has a focus on disability inclusion of sexual and reproductive health care. Our Tanzanian program is a key partner in this Australia government funded scheme and has worked collaboratively with various partners in Tanzania to produce an educational family planning video for the hearing impaired.
The video will greatly benefit people with hearing impairments who have previously had difficulties accessing information on family planning. It addresses widespread misconceptions about family planning and explains the benefits of spacing births in Tanzanian Sign Language, with a voiceover in KiSwahili (the national language).
The team will now be able to reach a wider community, not only people who are deaf or who have hearing impairments, but also their family members, partners, friends and caregivers.
This tool will be used in the outreach programs in rural areas of Tanzania and can also be used in other KiSwahili speaking MSI countries such as Kenya.
