New report on ending unsafe abortions

23 September 2014

This week, world leaders are meeting in New York at the United Nation’s 69th General Assembly to discuss the future of global development.

We want to remind them, and everyone, that women die unnecessarily from unsafe abortion, every day. This is a tragedy. But we know how to stop it. It’s time to act.

Throughout history, in every country, women find themselves faced with a pregnancy they didn’t intend. The consequences can be dire. In the world today there are:

  • 222 million women who don’t want to get pregnant who aren’t able to do anything about it
  • 21.6 million unsafe abortions each year
  • 8 million women who suffer disability or complications from unsafe abortions, 3 million of which don’t get the care they need
  • 47,000 women dying from unsafe abortion each year.

Today, Marie Stopes International launched a report about how we can achieve a world where women don’t die from an unsafe abortion. The report can be accessed at
