Daw Kyi Lay’s life has changed for the better, through the gift of family planning.

Daw Kyi Lay, 62 from Myanmar (Burma) is living proof of the benefits of family planning. Twenty seven years ago she had a single interaction with Marie Stopes International Myanmar that changed her life for the better.

Daw Kyi Lay had already been pregnant 10 times by the time she was 35. Seven of her children tragically died from diarrhoea when they were very young. She also saw one of her best friends pass away from sepsis as a result of an unsafe abortion.

At that time in her life Daw Kyi Lay had no control over her pregnancies and no awareness about family planning.

Life changed one day when Daw Kyi Lay came to a Marie Stopes International Myanmar clinic and received an intrauterine device (IUD) that helped her to space out her pregnancies. One single device, led to Daw Kyi Lay being able to make life choices that she wouldn’t have been able to make if she had continued to have unwanted pregnancies.

Daw Kyi Lay met one of our sexual and reproductive health promoters while she was at a Marie Stopes International Myanmar clinic one day, where she became interested in the work we do with the local community. Now, Daw Kyi Lay is working with Marie Stopes International Myanmar as a satisfied client volunteer to teach other women about the benefits of family planning.
