The couple year of protection* (CYP) is the key metric used by organisations delivering contraception and safe abortion services. It allows us to track the performance of our country programs in a consistent way.
One CYP is the equivalent of one year of contraceptive protection for one couple. Some of the CYPs delivered in a specific year will actually be ‘used’ over future years, because they come from long-acting and permanent methods. For instance, an intrauterine device (IUD) is equivalent to nealry five couple years of protection.
The services that we provided in 2014 resulted in 29.2 million CYPs, which is by far the largest number of CYPs that we have delivered in a single year and represents a 19% increase on 2013.
We focus our work where there is the greatest need, which is why more than three quarters of our CYPs were delivered in the 24 countries we work in across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
In particular, for the first time ever Marie Stopes Papua New Guinea exceeded the 100,000 CYP mark in November 2014. This achievement by the team means that 100,000 years of protection from unwanted pregnancy have been provided. 2015 will see the continuation of this work which can only be achieved through your ongoing support.
