The organisation announced that it would be working in partnership with the existing Croydon Day Surgery’s owner and medical director, Dr Mark Schulberg, to manage the clinic and provide access to much needed sexual and reproductive health services.
“Our aim is to bring a quality of care, accessibility and consistency in providing sexual health and pregnancy choices to Australian women,” said Jill Michelson, National Clinical Adviser for Marie Stopes International.
“Dr Schulberg and his team provide vital access to a range of high-quality reproductive healthcare services for women around Victoria and across Australia.
“By partnering with the team, Marie Stopes International will be able to support their much needed work through the provision of our organisation’s quality assurance and national operational support systems.”
The centre will also come under the governance of Marie Stopes International’s National Medical Advisory Committee, which oversees all clinical standards and protocols in Marie Stopes centres.
“All of this will help ensure that the outstanding and unique service that Dr Schulberg and his team provide continues, and that women have access to safe abortion services within the remit of Victorian Law,” said Ms Michelson.
The Marie Stopes International Maroondah centre will offer a range of medical and surgical abortion services, contraceptive consultations and insertions and sexually transmitted infection testing.
Marie Stopes International was established as a registered charity in London in 1976. Founded on giving women and men the freedom to control their own fertility, it grew out of the organisation originally set up by Dr Marie Stopes - the family planning pioneer who opened London’s first family planning centre in 1921.
Marie Stopes International has 13 licensed and accredited centres across Australia. In Victoria, Marie Stopes International has centres in East St Kilda, East Melbourne and Maroondah and provides services in Sunshine from the Western Day Surgery. Centres are also located in New South Wales (Sydney CBD, Homebush, Fairfield, Kingswood, Westmead, Newcastle), Queensland (Caboolture, Salisbury), Western Australia (Midland) and the ACT (Canberra City). Services include abortion, vasectomy, sexually transmitted infection check-ups, contraception and health promotion activities.
Today, Marie Stopes International is a global international partnership that delivers vital health services to over five million people in 42 countries worldwide. Surplus funds from Australian centres support the family planning and sexual health services and education programs that Marie Stopes delivers in developing countries - saving lives by reducing the number of women that die in pregnancy and childbirth.
