SNAKE Condoms
SNAKE Condoms is Australia’s first ever indigenous friendly, socially marketed condom brand and was created for and by Aboriginal youth as a means of addressing the rising STI rates and teenage pregnancy rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The initiative promotes culturally appropriate condoms, through marketing approaches that aim to positively affect social behaviour in terms of safer sex practice.
Based on the success of the pilot run in Victoria in 2004, a nation-wide SNAKE Condom expansion strategy was formulated. As a result, funding was secured this year to allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from all over Australia to benefit from this innovative campaign.
The SNAKE Condoms project has been a highly successful project with sales continuing to grow. In 2008 over 168,000 SNAKE condoms were sold (tripled that of 2007 when 42,400 were sold) and so far in 2009, there has been an astounding 60,000 sold.
