Recent Achievements
Marie Stopes International Australia is the leader in sexual and reproductive health in international development in the Pacific Asia region and within Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
In 2008 MSIA provided sexual and reproductive health services and education to over 710,000 people in 10 country programs.
These services include a variety of sexual and reproductive areas such as: family planning, safe abortion & post-abortion care, maternal & child healthcare including antenatal care and safe delivery, diagnosis & treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HIV prevention.
Currently, we are dramatically expanding health service delivery for low-income women and couples. This expansion involves adding clinics and rural outreach programs in new countries and new regions of existing countries; creating social franchising networks to further expand access; and the wide distribution of high-quality, affordably-priced contraceptives with an emphasis on long-term methods.
In 2008 Marie Stopes International Australia:
- saved the lives of 1369 mothers, 15,653 infants, 19,686 children under five
- provided 2 million couples with a years worth of protection of unintended pregnancy
- distributed over 6 million condoms which protected over 61,500 couples from the transmission of HIV and STIs
- through family planning education and contraceptives averted 489,702 abortions
- through being a trusted provider of abortion averted 335,785 unsafe abortions which often result in death or life-disabling injury or illness
