Marie Stopes Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program

The population of Australia is recognised as being one of the healthiest of any developed country. In contrast, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population is one of the least healthy, even worse than in many developing countries.

Rates for infant mortality, teenage pregnancy and STIs are remarkably high among the Aboriginal population, and the rate of HIV notification is increasing.

Marie Stopes International Australia (MSIA) has brought its reproductive health expertise to work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Australia in an attempt to address this unmet need. We have created a separate organisation called Marie Stopes Australia (MSA) which is dedicated to raising funds and implementing projects for improving reproductive health amongst needy communities in Australia, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

All MSA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander projects are implemented in conjunction with the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). These partnerships are vital to the success of any MSA project in the community, not only ensuring interventions are culturally sensitive, but enabling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to control and develop their own health solutions.

MSA current program aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia is the SNAKE Condoms Social Marketing Intiative. To learn more about SNAKE simply click on the link below or visit the SNAKE Condoms website.
