Cambodia

With a population of over 14 million people, Cambodia is one of Asia's poorest and least developed countries.

There remains unmet need for family planning services.

Providing free tubal ligation and IUD services for rural and remote women in camps by conducting outreach services.

Cambodian women and men have the right to increased access to, and utilisation of, highquality reproductive health services. Increased awareness and empowerment of the population, particularly women and youth, regarding their reproductive rights and choices is fundamental to achieving these outcomes.

In 2008 the milestones for the program in Cambodia were:

- Providing free tubal ligation and IUD services for rural and remote women in camps by conducting outreach services

- Stemming the transmission of mother to child HIV/AIDS by providing free voluntary testing and counselling services

- Helping 3,500 garment factory workers obtain access to family planning and sexually transmitted infection testing services

In 2008, Marie Stopes International Cambodia (MSIC) played an important role in addressing these needs. Most importantly, the team worked in partnership with the Government of Cambodia (in government health facilities) to deliver medium and permanent methods of family planning. Without MSIC these facilities would not have offered such services.

In addition, MSIC conducted outreach camps throughout the country, providing free tubal ligation services for poor rural and remote women. These camps, complemented urban activities that targeted poor and vulnerable garment factory workers. MSIC is preventing mother to child transmission of HIV by offering ongoing integrated reproductive health, voluntary testing and counselling services for women who would not otherwise have sought HIV testing services.

At the conclusion of the year, MSIC has a committed team working towards a common vision of ensuring that every woman and man has access to reproductive health education, services and commodities so that they can plan their families and have children by choice, not chance.
